TWO AT ONCE! Reversible Quilt-As-You-Go Placemats

TWO AT ONCE! Yes, you can make one placemat for 2 unique looks at the same time! The finished size of this project is approximately 12” x 24”. Even if you’ve never made a curvy anything, you can accomplish this project using the 10-degree ruler, which you will learn to use in class. This is a PERFECT project for the sewist who can’t decide between something seasonal or something to match your kitchen. You get the best of BOTH worlds!
In this class, you’ll be cutting strips and arranging them to your personal taste. Once you’ve decided on your layout, you will sew the strips and batting together in a Quilt-As-You-Go method, which is sometimes referred to as "Stitch & Flip." Once you are done sewing your strips together, we’ll trim and attach a bias binding, which you will learn to make right in class. After you learn the technique, you can make additional placemats or a table runner using the pattern from the class!

Student Supply List
Please bring the following gear and tools to class:
-
Your sewing machine that you know how to use (don’t forget your foot control, power cord, extra bobbins, and sewing threads).
-
A 1/4” foot or a sewing foot that allows you to do an accurate 1/4” seam.
-
A walking foot (highly helpful because you will be stitching through layers of batting and fabric).
-
A foot for attaching the binding is also helpful.
-
Your rotary cutter with a SHARP blade, and a 12” long (or longer) ruler for trimming.
-
General sewing supplies: pins, binding clips (A MUST), fabric markers, scissors, seam remover, etc.
Fabric & Tool Requirements:
-
Fabrics for the Placemat Sides: For each side of the placemat, you will need several fabrics. The amount will be determined by how many different fabrics you want for each side of the mat. You can use fat quarters, quarter yards, or strips (at least 15” long). Scrappy is fine as long as the pieces are large enough!
-
Binding Fabric: Minimum 15” square of fabric.
-
Batting: 3/4 yard of table runner batting or other thin batting.
-
Specialty Ruler & Pattern: You will need a 10-degree ruler (approx. $30) and the class pattern (approx. $10).
CRITICAL PREPARATION NOTE FROM VONNIE: Please have your fabric STARCHED prior to class. Because the fabrics will be cut on a slight bias, starch will help lower the risk of stretching while you work.
Store Discount Details: There is no pre-made kit for this class so you can customize your look completely! All items purchased at Ana's Sewing Studio for this class will receive your special class discount.
Need the Ruler? If you need us to provide the 10-degree ruler, please let the shop know by June 20th so we can order it for you at your class discount!
